Positions défensives

DEFENSIVE BACK

The primary objective of a defensive back is to cover wide receivers and either intercept passes or pull the ball carrier’s flags. This position can be played in either man-to-man coverage or zone coverage, depending on the coach’s strategy and league rules.

Skills:

  • Speed and agility to cover opposing players

  • Mental awareness to read the play and react to passing plays versus running plays

  • Ability to react to the ball and intercept passes

  • Proper technique for pulling the ball carrier’s flags: correct alignment, positioning, and movement

Rusher

Rushing the quarterback is an important defensive role, as it prevents the quarterback from completing a pass. The rusher starts seven yards behind the line of scrimmage at the snap, and the quarterback has seven seconds to throw the ball. In short, the faster the rusher reaches the quarterback, the more opportunities the defensive team has to force mistakes and intercept the pass.

Skills:

  • Speed and acceleration, with the ability to arrive under control near the quarterback to pull the flag(s)

  • Proper technique for pulling the ball carrier’s flags: correct alignment, positioning, and movement

SAFETY

Some flag football teams will line up with a single safety, although this is more common in 7-on-7 leagues. This player lines up deeper behind the line of scrimmage and acts as a last line of defense, stopping anyone who breaks free. If an offensive player gets past a running play or a wide receiver breaks into deep coverage, the safety steps in to cover and prevent the ball carrier from scoring.

Skills:

  • Ability to read and react to the play, making quick decisions about where coverage is needed

  • Speed and acceleration

  • Proper technique for pulling the ball carrier’s flags: correct alignment, positioning, and movement
